First off, is you'll notice that there are some sewing machines that say they are specifically quilting sewing machines. There are some models out there that specify that they are for quilters, and you might wonder if you need them. How is a quilting sewing machine different from a "regular" sewing machine? Well first off, many times it has a bigger area to sew, since when making quilts sometimes you have a large amount of fabric that you are sewing. They also include special sewing pedals that make it easier to sew through many layers of fabric at a time. They also usually include a few different stitches, so you can choose what stitch you want for different parts of your quilt.
Do You Need These Specialty Machines?
Many of these "quilting sewing machines" are very expensive. We're talking about over $1,000 each. Do they do a good job? Of course they do. But do you need them? That's where I would have to say no. In order to make a really nice quilt, of course you want a decent sewing machine. But the truth of the matter is, you don't need a very fancy one. Even many of the sewing machines that you can buy now that are around $100 or less come with many amazing features. You can get one that will have 60 different stitches to choose from for under one hundred dollars. Why would you want to spend ten times that amount because the machine is calling a quilting sewing machine?
The truth is the point of a sewing machine is to quickly and easily sew pieces of fabric together. This is true whether it is for a quilt, clothes, or anything else. So if you have many choices for stitches, you should be set. So personally, I think you are better off getting a decent sewing machine for your quilting than getting a specific quilting sewing machine. You will still be very happy with your purchase, and can then use the money you saved to start buying fabrics to make your quilts with!
